About Ophthalmology Society Of Uganda
Mission :
The mission of the society is to increase the numbers of eye health workers, improve their welfare and quality of eye care in Uganda through training, research and sub-specialty.
Objectives :

To encourage the study of ophthalmology and allied arts and sciences; to promote the highest degree of skill and efficiency in their practice.

To promote and encourage and where possible to provide, facilities for teaching, training and instruction in ophthalmology and allied arts and sciences in so far as the society may from time to time regard such action as being necessary or expedient.

To promote and encourage research in ophthalmology in particular and generally in medical, surgical and allied arts and sciences.

To provide a forum for all ophthalmologists and all those interested in ophthalmology to meet and share knowledge as well as engage in scientific discussions and practical demonstrations.

To conduct examinations of candidates for admission to the society and such other examinations in the various branches of medicine, surgery and allied arts and sciences as may from time to time be deemed appropriate.

To grant diplomas, certificates or other equivalent recognition to medical practitioners having special knowledge in ophthalmology and allied arts or sciences, provided that no diploma , certificate or other equivalent recognition shall be granted to any person who has not attained by examination or other test the prescribed standard of proficiency unless the society after due enquiry and investigation , deems such person to possess the requisite qualifications for such diploma or certificate.

To make and wherever desirable to rescind, alter or amend articles, by-laws or regulations for regulating any matters connected with the admission to the society of any person or the election of any person to fellowship of, or other status in, the society.

To admit to membership of the society and to search other status therein such persons as are eligible in accordance with the Articles of Association, By-laws or Regulations of the Society for the time being in operation.

To take all such steps and adopt all such lawful ways and means as are calculated to promote the honour of the medical profession and the interests of ophthalmology and allied arts and sciences.

To provide, establish and maintain offices, examination halls, lecture rooms, libraries and museums, with all requisite equipment, and to institute and provide such courses of lectures and demonstrations and maybe deemed desirable.

To acquire by purchase, donation or otherwise a library of scientific works and to maintain and from time to time extend and improve such libraries.

To acquire, establish, print and publish books, magazines, periodicals, news papers , leaflets , or other literally or scientific works as may be deemed expedient in the interest of the society or as maybe deemed desirable for the promotion of its objects .

To diffuse among the members, information on all matters affecting medical, surgical and allied arts and sciences and ophthalmology in particular and to establish, print, publish, issue and circulate such papers, journals, magazines, books , periodicals , circulars , calendars and publication as may seem conducive to any of these objects or in anyway beneficial to the society or its members.

To relate harmoniously with individual country ophthalmological chapters aimed at supporting and regulating the operations of these chapters as well as to endeavor to strengthen, oversee, encourage, guide and set standards for the establishment and operations of such societies.

To accept any gift, endowment or bequest made to the society generally or for the purpose of any specific object and to carry out any trusts attached to any such gift, endowment or bequest.

To undertake and execute any trust which may lawfully be undertaken by the society and maybe conducive to the attainment of its objects.

To purchase, take on lease, exchange, hire or otherwise acquire any real, personal, movable or immovable property, rights, interests or privileges necessary or convenient for the purpose of the society.

To sell, dispose of, exchange, hire, mortgage , charge , let , deal with , or turn to account , any of the property and rights of the society, as may from time to time be considered expedient or desirable in the interests of the society.

To borrow, or raise or secure the payment of money without limitation as to amount, in such manner, on such terms and conditions and upon such security as may be determined, and in particular by pledge, mortgage, hypothecation ; or by debentures or debenture stock, perpetual or otherwise, charged upon all or any of the property of the society ( both present and future ) personal, real , movable and/or immovable and to purchase, redeem or payoff any such securities.

To invest the monies of the society not immediately required for the purpose thereof in or upon such investments, securities or property as maybe thought desirable.

To draw, make, accept, endorse, execute and issue promissory notes, bills of exchange, and other negotiable or transferable instruments.

To establish and support or aid in establishment and support of any charitable or benevolent associations or institutions connected with the purposes of the society, or calculated to further the objects of the society.

To delegate all or any of the powers of the society to the board or any committee or committees of the board consisting of one or more members.

To payout of the funds of the society all costs, charges and expenses preliminary and incidental to the promotion, formation, establishment, registration and advertising of the society.

To promote, form or establish separate divisions, classes or groups within the society in so far as the board may from time to time regard such actions as being necessary or expedient.

If and whenever considered advisable, to apply or petition for, or promote any legislation for the purposes of society, or for the re-incorporation of all or a particular section or sections of the members thereof or for continuing and expanding the work thereof.

To promote or oppose any legislation or other measures affecting any matters connected with medicine, surgery or allied arts or sciences and ophthalmology in particular as maybe deemed expedient in the interest of society.

In so far as maybe found to be consistent with low to promote or assist in the promotion of any company, association or college for or with any purpose or objects akin to the objects of the society and to effect or assist in effecting the incorporation of such company, association or college under the companies act or any other law and in any place whose so ever.

In so far as it maybe found to be consistent with law to promote, form or be interested in any other company, association or college from time to time whose objects shall include the acquisition and taking over of all or any of the property, rights, interests and liability of the society and to transfer to any such company, association or college any property rights, interests and liabilities of the society and to subsidize or otherwise assist such company, association or college.

To establish and open if deemed necessary branch offices of the society

To do all the foregoing and such other lawful things as maybe incidental or conducive to the attainment, promotion or carrying out of the foregoing objects or any of them.
